MARC RIBOT
When we talk about the downtown scene, we refer to that very lively season that saw innovative and unprejudiced young musicians converge on Manhattan, breaking down the boundaries between rock, punk, free, ethnic music, experimental classical, film scores, song. John Zorn and guitarist Marc Ribot (1954) stood out in this ferment as the two most eccentric, both determined to claim even the Jewish origin of their culture. Ribot, occasionally also a singer, is the architect of a sonic guitar revolution, as unmistakable in his Lounge Lizards records, in his work with Tom Waits, as in his Ceramic Dog records, in which he mixes jazz and Cuban folklore or noise and song. Ironic and casual, Ribot has literally changed the sound of contemporary music, pulverizing genres and winning new audiences to today’s music.
CLAUDIO FASOLI NEXT 4ET
Claudio Fasoli // tenor and soprano saxophone
Simone Massaron // guitar, electronics
Tito Mangialajo Rantzer // double bass
Stefano Grasso // drums, percussion
Of a completely different stamp is the music of Claudio Fasoli (1939), in whose long career, from the glories of the 1970s with the jazz-rock group Perigeo to the thoughtful acoustic works from the 1980s onward, the red thread of a dry taste for melody, a fervid harmonic imagination and a saxophone lyricism as controlled as it is touching is visible. The NeXt Quartet, which he has been conducting for the past few years, confirms his talents as a composer whose open-meshed music allows all the necessary space for the imaginative contributions of the other musicians, co-leading one of the most cohesive groups on the Italian scene. The album NeXt won Top Jazz 2021 as the best Italian record.
