Cuban by birth, language and culture, American by profession, Gonzalo Rubalcaba emerged in the 1980s as a virtuoso of dazzling dexterity, amphibious between jazz and Cuban music. Over time his personality became increasingly defined, intense, and his style dried up, reaching in recent years heights of interpretive sophistication that have earned him international recognition. His latest solo piano disc is a thoughtful exploration of celebrated standards, in which Rubalcaba immerses himself with a moving sensitivity, evidence of a maturity that places him at the top of contemporary pianism.
