Described by the international press as “the high priestess of psychedelic Arabic jazz”, Yazz Ahmed performs in quartet on October 11 at Sala Vanni for her only Italian date. The British-Bahraini trumpeter and composer blends jazz and electronics with the Arabic roots of her cultural heritage, creating a unique and distinctive sound.
Throughout her career, she has collaborated with artists such as Radiohead, Lee Scratch Perry, Natacha Atlas, and Rabih Abou-Khalil. With her album Polyhymnia—a suite dedicated to courageous women—she received the Ivor Novello Award for Innovation and was voted Album of the Year at the 2020 Jazz FM Awards. “Through my music,” she says, “I hope to build bridges between cultures and change the perception of women in jazz and of people of Middle Eastern origin.”
In 2025 she releases A Paradise in the Hold, an intense and deeply personal work rooted in the traditional music of Bahrain, weaving together the melancholic songs of pearl divers with the festive rhythms of women’s percussion.
Opening act: ALESSANDRA DIODATI
“To be born” is Alessandra Diodati’s project for voice and electronics, exploring the very substance of sound through the body, crossing the boundaries between speech, song, and noise. Inspired by the vocal research of Demetrio Stratos, it investigates extended techniques and timbral experimentation, weaving together pure vocality and electronic processing.
The original compositions, rooted in personal and cultural experiences, move across languages and perceptive states, creating a sonic space where the voice transforms, multiplies, and expands. Electronics are not a mere accompaniment but an active presence that dialogues, distorts, and amplifies, opening new expressive perspectives. It is a work born from the urgency to inhabit the voice in all its forms, between ritual, memory, and vision.
