It is well known that jazz feeds on many traits of African musics; it is less well known that since the 1950s, jazz has taken root here and there in Africa, fertilizing the development of both indigenous genres such as highlife and afrobeat, and artists more akin to African American aesthetics. The best African jazz musicians studied in Europe and the U.S., and then perhaps moved globally. Lionel Loueke has long established himself as one of the most original contemporary guitarists and collaborates steadily with Dave Holland, in a duo founded on the bassist’s typical grooves, more agile and powerful than ever, weaving guitar lines between jazz and Africa.
