MISHA MENGELBERG & HAN BENNINK

Dai primi anni ’60 la collaborazione tra il pianista Misha Mengelberg ed il percussionista e multistrumentista Han Bennink è tra le più felici e creative.
I musicisti olandesi sono infatti due protagonisti assoluti del nuovo jazz europeo, tra i primi a definire un approccio originale allo spirito della tradizione musicale afroamericana.
Dopo aver suonato con i grandi del jazz degli anni ’60 di passaggio in Europa (nel 1964 Mengelberg e Bennink parteciparono alla registrazione di “Last Date”, l’ultimo album di Eric Dolphy), i due approdarono ad una sintesi in cui convive tanto conoscenza e rispetto per la vicenda del jazz quanto la ricerca di nuovi ambiti espressivi, nel ricorso all’improvvisazione ed alla creazione musicale istantanea in una proposta ricca di gag ed invenzioni teatrali.
Insieme i due hanno creato l’ICP Orchestra, un ensemble ancora attivo oggi, il cui repertorio spazia dalle composizioni originali ad omaggi alla storia del jazz, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Nichols, e nel tempo hanno rinnovato la straordinaria intesa del loro duo.
Contemporaneamente sia Bennink che Mengelberg sono stati impegnati in una lunga serie di realizzazioni solistiche, Mengelberg ha registrato da solo, in trio, quartetto, fino a collaborare con i musicisti della nuova scena jazz di Chicago degli ultimi anni; Bennink ha al suo attivo una lunga serie di incisioni, fino agli impegni più recenti con il gruppo Clusone 3 ed i duetti con il trombettista Dave Douglas ed il sassofonista Ellery Eskelin. Inoltre Han Bennink è un affermato artista visivo, ed ha al suo attivo numerose mostre ed installazioni sonore.

Since the early ‘60s the collaboration between pianist and composer Misha Mengelberg and drummer and multi-instrumentalist Han Bennink is one of the most creative and unique.
The two dutch musicians are two of the greatest masters of new european jazz, among the firsts to definy a personal approach to the spirit of afroamerican musical tradition.
In the ‘60s they both played with american greatest musicians touring Europe (in ’64 they recorded “Last Date”, Eric Dolphy’s last recordings) and they arrived to a personal sinthesys that was mixing respect and knowledge for jazz’s history and research for new musical perspectives.
Mengelberg and Bennink started ICP Orchestra, that is still together, whose repertory includes original compositions and tribute to jazz history, to Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Nichols, and during the years they also worked many times as a duo.
Both Mengelberg and Bennink separately were busy with several different projects. Mengelberg recorded in solo, trio, quartet and recently he also collaborated with musicians of the new Chicago jazz scene; Bennink worked for years with Clusone 3, playing in Europe and in the U.S, and in duo with Ellery Eskelin, with Dave Douglas. He is also a very talented visual artist and he realized many visual and musical installations and exhibitions.
